From time to time, unexpected situations arise. When an issue occurs, we will do everything we can to accommodate you with our Thornbury emergency dentist, whether it involves rescheduling appointments or extending our hours, all with the goal of alleviating your pain.
Please note that same-day emergencies do not encompass all dental issues. Here are a couple of examples of true emergencies:
Dental Trauma: If your tooth is knocked out, hold it by the crown (not the root), gently rinse it, and try to reinsert it in its socket, ensuring it's oriented correctly. If you are uncomfortable with this, store the tooth in saliva (keep it in your mouth next to your cheek) or in milk, and visit The Northside Dentist as soon as possible. Replacing a tooth within 30 minutes significantly increases the chances of saving it.
Dental Abscess: This can be potentially life-threatening. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, and a bad taste. Please make an appointment for immediate treatment.
Bleeding Gums: If you are a regular patient and experience bleeding gums, this could signify a dental emergency. Call our Thornbury dental practice to arrange an appointment.
Contact The Northside Dentist as soon as possible, and we will do everything we can to make you more comfortable and help you return to your daily life.

Eating is one of life’s greatest pleasures, but if you experience a tight jaw, chipped teeth, or headaches, you may be clenching or grinding your teeth.
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is one of the most complex joints in the body. It connects the lower jaw to the base of your skull, aided by muscles and a piece of cartilage that acts as a shock absorber, protecting your bones from wear and tear. You may not realise it, but stress is a significant contributor to teeth grinding. While practices like yoga, Pilates, and meditation can help release inner tension, they may not directly alleviate the strain on your teeth. There are several techniques for treating TMJ disorders, the most common being the use of a night guard.
Professional night guards can be beneficial if you:
Wake up with your teeth tightly clenched
Experience sore, tense facial muscles in the morning
Notice clicking or popping in the TMJ
Frequently chip your teeth
Observe stress lines on your teeth
Have a partner mention a grinding noise at night
Creating a professional night guard is relatively straightforward and an effective way to prevent TMJ disorders and protect against worn or broken teeth. During the first appointment, impressions of your upper and lower teeth will be taken using soft putty and sent to a dental laboratory. At the second appointment, approximately one week later, we will fit your custom-made night guard and provide instructions on how to wear it and maintain its cleanliness.
Ask your dentist at our High Street dental clinic for more information.

At The Northside Dentist, we understand that conditions like bruxism (teeth grinding) and temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) can significantly impact your quality of life. These issues can lead to discomfort, headaches, jaw pain, and other symptoms that interfere with daily activities. One innovative treatment option we offer is the use of Botox (botulinum toxin) to help alleviate these symptoms.
What is Bruxism and TMD?
Bruxism is the involuntary grinding or clenching of teeth, often occurring during sleep or periods of stress. It can result in worn-down teeth, jaw pain, and headaches.
Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TMD) refers to a group of disorders affecting the jaw joint and surrounding muscles, leading to pain, difficulty in jaw movement, and clicking or popping sounds.
How Does Botox Work for Bruxism and TMD?
Botox is a neuromuscular agent that temporarily relaxes the muscles where it is injected. When used for bruxism and TMD, Botox injections target the overactive jaw muscles, providing several benefits:
Pain Relief: Reduces muscle tension and discomfort associated with grinding and clenching.
Reduced Grinding: Helps minimize the frequency and intensity of teeth grinding.
Improved Jaw Function: Alleviates symptoms that interfere with normal jaw movement, making it easier to chew and speak.
The Treatment Process
Consultation: During your initial appointment, we will assess your symptoms and discuss your medical history to determine if Botox is a suitable option for you.
Injection: If Botox is recommended, the treatment involves a few quick injections into the targeted muscles around your jaw. The procedure is minimally invasive and typically takes just a few minutes.
Individualized Treatment: The amount of Botox required can vary from person to person based on the severity of the symptoms.
Follow-Up Appointment: A follow-up appointment will be scheduled two weeks after your initial treatment to assess your progress. During this visit, we will evaluate if additional Botox is needed to achieve optimal results.
Results: Patients often begin to experience relief within a few days, with optimal results lasting for three to six months. Follow-up treatments can be scheduled as needed.
Why Choose Botox for Bruxism and TMD?
Non-Surgical Solution: Botox offers a non-invasive approach to managing symptoms without the need for surgery.
Quick Recovery: There’s minimal downtime, allowing you to return to your daily activities immediately after treatment.
Complementary Treatment: Botox can be used alongside other therapies, such as physical therapy or dental appliances, for comprehensive management of your condition.
Is Botox Right for You?
If you suffer from bruxism or TMD, Botox may be a viable option to help manage your symptoms and improve your quality of life. Our experienced team at The Northside Dentist is here to answer your questions and guide you through the treatment process.
Contact us today to schedule a consultation and learn more about how Botox can help you find relief from the pain and discomfort of bruxism and TMD.
